SDG 15 - Life on Land

The Impact Project

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

Chris Guglielmo – Wildlife Migration Researcher

Chris studies how birds and bats respond to habitat destruction, pollution, urbanization, wildfire smoke and climate change. Through Western’s Centre for Animals on the Move, the research provides valuable data for scientists and policymakers working to protect key habitats and migration routes. These findings contribute directly to SDG 15 through stronger wildlife conservation and a better understanding of terrestrial ecosystem health.

Alissa Centivany – Right to Repair Advocate

Alissa advocates for the right to repair electronics, appliances, vehicles and agricultural machinery. Extending the lifespan of these products can reduce waste and the demand for new raw materials, helping limit pollution and pressure on natural resources. Her work provides a broader contribution to SDG 15 by promoting consumption practices that reduce environmental damage to terrestrial ecosystems.

Egide Kalisa – Environmental Health and Pollution Researcher

Egide studies exposure to environmental pollutants and leads community-based programs that empower students to monitor and improve air quality. Through his Breathe Easy initiative, he combines pollution sensors, education and anti-idling campaigns to promote practical environmental action. His work also contributes to SDG 15 by helping reduce pollution pressures that can affect terrestrial ecosystems and environmental health.

Chantelle Richmond – Indigenous Land and Knowledge Advocate

Chantelle’s work recognizes land as a source of knowledge, culture and community well-being. In partnership with Indigenous communities, she supports land-based activities that restore traditional knowledge and practices related to growing, hunting, preparing and storing food. Her approach reflects SDG 15’s focus on sustainable land use, ecosystem stewardship and the value of Indigenous knowledge in caring for the environment.

Diane-Laure Arjaliès – Nature and Biodiversity Finance Researcher

Through Western’s Sustainable Finance Lab, Diane-Laure develops financial tools that recognize the value of living ecosystems and support nature-based solutions. The Deshkan Ziibi Conservation Impact Bond has helped restore 69 hectares of habitat in southwestern Ontario. By directing investment toward biodiversity and ecological restoration, her work advances SDG 15’s goals of protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems.
