SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
The Impact Project
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
Gordon Osinski – Space Geologist and Technology Developer
Gordon’s leadership in space exploration and lunar rover development exemplifies cutting-edge innovation. His work fosters cross-disciplinary research, technology transfer, and STEM education, all of which are central to SDG 9’s goals of promoting scientific research and upgrading technological capabilities.
Brie O'Sullivan - Medical Drone Researcher
Brie’s research into drone delivery systems for remote health care access contributes to resilient infrastructure and technological innovation in underserved regions, aligning with SDG 9’s emphasis on inclusive industrialization.
Luke Stark – AI and Technology Ethics Researcher
Luke’s work explores the social and ethical impacts of emerging technologies, encouraging critical thinking about how AI is developed and used. His research supports SDG 9’s goal of fostering inclusive, responsible innovation and resilient digital infrastructure.
Tarun Katapally – Digital Health Systems Researcher
Tarun’s work on mobile health platforms and climate-resilient digital infrastructure supports innovation in public health systems, especially in remote and Indigenous communities, contributing to SDG 9’s focus on equitable access to infrastructure and technology.
Josh Givans – Accessible Technology Innovator
Josh’s work develops affordable, open-source medical technology designed to be built and used in low-resource communities. Through Western’s FAST Research Group, he uses 3D printing and open-source design to improve access to essential technologies, including a lower-cost light therapy system for treating newborn jaundice. His focus on accessible hardware, local production and sustainable technological innovation aligns strongly with SDG 9’s goals of fostering innovation and expanding access to technology.
Kato Hussein Wabbi – Biomedical Engineering Innovator
Kato’s work uses engineering and artificial intelligence to strengthen health-care infrastructure in resource-limited communities. He is developing a low-cost, AI-powered system that can be added to medical equipment to monitor signals such as temperature, vibration and power consumption and predict failures before they occur. By making critical medical technology more reliable, affordable and maintainable in underserved regions, his work aligns with SDG 9’s goals of building resilient infrastructure and supporting inclusive technological innovation.
