Tracing the Origins of Martian Meteorites

In a groundbreaking study published in Science Advances, planetary geologist Livio Tornabene, a member of Western’s Institute for Earth and Space Exploration, along with an international team of researchers, has traced the origins of most Martian meteorites found on Earth to five specific craters within Mars’ Tharsis and Elysium volcanic regions. Building on Tornabene’s 2006 work with advanced techniques and data, the research offers new insights into Mars’ geological history and a framework that could reshape future studies of Martian meteorites.
